With modern gaming, I've gotten used to f5 and f9 as my quicksave and quickload keys. I've tried to bind them in System Shock 2, but it's not really working - the bind dialogue comes up and I hit the requisite function key, but the binding remains blank (or bound to whatever it was bound to before). I'm using a laptop with secondary functions for the function keys, but the BIOS is set to recognize them as function keys (f1-f12) before the secondary functions (i.e. fn+f5 = keyboard backlight).

In other words, SS2 won't bind f5 and f9 to quicksave and quickload - any ideas?

try editing your user.bnd manually - it should be pretty self explanatory.

Terrific - a quick and effective solution. Looking in there, it looks like shift + f1-f12 can bind an item to that function key for quick usage. I'll have to try that sometime.
I hope you're not planning on ever playing a psionic character, because the function keys are used for selecting psi powers.
