The game runs fine, but there aren't any sound effects. I tried pressing F1 to enable them, but that just makes the game freeze for a moment.

If that's not what's in your SYND.INF, change it, or, if you don't have a SYND.INF, create one (also creating the SYND subfolder, if that's missing, too) and add that.

FYI, I think that this is related to the problems with saving in the game that many people have, since the savegames and the sound settings file (SYND.INF) are both in the SYND folder. That SYND folder doesn't exist initially and is created only when the user runs SYND.EXE for the first time. I think that some people either try to run MAIN.EXE to start the game or SYND.EXE isn't getting permission to create the SYND folder, leading to both problems (savegames and sound not working).
