-Best sound: Adlib

Adlib is digital sound; it was either concurrent with or immediately preceded Soundblaster, can't remember.

-Actual best sound: Roland MT-32

Roland is analog and sounds incredible. Microprose made it an option for all of their games. But to use it, you either need the actual hardware (an MT-32 board) or an emulator you have set up already for dosbox.
