When using the alternate server browser there are servers with SWAT 4X instead of 1.0 or 1.1, so what is it?

It's the official expansion The Stetchkov Syndicate which is included in the Gold Edition. It has to be launched separately from the main game.

From what I remember (from many years ago) is that since it adds more features there is no need to run any other version. Why would you run the original that has less maps and less features? Please correct me if I am wrong since I haven't played it for so long.

Yes, you are completely right. You can have access to the equipment from Syndicate and play maps from vanilla SWAT 4.
