This is a follow-up to the money post I did a while back, and represents meta-gaming at its most grindy. Nonetheless, many adventures and events in Sunless Sea require high statistics to have a chance of success, and if you play the game organically it will take FOREVER to get any significant increases. And so, if you are so inclined, here is how to farm stats.

-Three locations are important for stat farming: Irem, Gaider's Mourn and Mount Palmerston.
-On Irem you can buy a secret for 999 echoes. Ending a lucrative run in a Merchant Ship at Irem can allow you to purchase 3 to 4 stat increases with secrets, although I recommend saving one Secret for a more valuable source of stat increases.
-Gaider's Mourn and Mount Palmerston both have a random event where you get 'A view from above', and this is your main source of stat increases. It crops up more often on Mount Palmerston (one in four visits, or one in five if you've dropped Blemmigans ashore) so I recommend visiting Mount Palmerston after Irem. Here's the procedure:

-Visit and 'explore the island'. Don't put any Blemmigans ashore.
-If you get 'A view from above, great! If not, leave port, move a short distance out and just sit and wait for the lantern to reappear, indicating an event at port. Turn around and head in.
-Repeat until you get 'A view from above'. You can do this over and over, buying fuel and food cheap at Mount Palmerston while you wait to get the boosts.

-For the first while you should always select the option where you 'Think about your past', which will result in a +5 boost to your preferred stat. Eventually you will pass 100 in this stat and the option will be closed to you, and that's when you have to start thinking about the Gods, which is where Whither and the House of the Question comes in.
-So imagine you have your route that takes you around the map counter-clockwise, ending at Irem to buy secrets and then on to Mount Palmserston. On this route you are going to need to accumulate everything necessary to buy the attention of as many gods as possible in Whither. Here's what you will need:

-For SALT, you need:
-A Zee-Story (easily acquired on Shepherd's Isles by asking about the 'Tales of the Three Graves')
-A Secret (purchase it in Irem)
-10 Echoes

-For STONE, you need:
-1 Fuel
-1 Watchful Curio (buy one in Irem for 1 Secret, or in a Candle-Lit Shop in Khan's Heart for 77 Echoes)
-10 Echoes

-And for the hardest one, STORM, you need:
-1 Cask of Mushroom Wine (buy in London)
-1 Live Specimen (Tricky! You can try to catch one alive in the 'Shadowy Predator' event in Gaider's Mourn, Port Cecil and Demeaux Island, but it isn't easy to do. You might find one in a unprepossessing mass as well, so always select the goo option if you find something on a beach.)
-10 Echoes

-As you do your arc, collect what you need for SALT and STONE, and try for a Live Speciman so you can get STORM. At Whither, trade in your treasures to get the attention of each God, then continue on your arc until you work your way around to Mount Palmerston.
-Visit Mount Palmerston over and over until you get 'A view from above' once for each 'attention' you have gained, and as you stare out over the vista, think about the god you have attention for. This will give you a total of +4 stat increases each time.
-Once you have used up all your attentions, continue on your way to Whither and buy as many as you can again. Then repeat.

-If you do these tricks with a Merchant Ship and follow the money-making tips from my previous post, you will be making enough on each trip to buy 2 or 3 secrets in Irem, gain at least +8 stats in Mount Palmerston, and be able to increase your stats as much as you want. It takes a lot of patience however... but hey, you're playing Sunless Sea, so you're already a patient person.

-Happy stat farming!

Good tips - though as you say it's a bit grindy, but unfortunately that's the way they've written this game.

One thing to add: You should be able to purchase a live specimen at London once the Zoo opens up for 500, which should save a lot of time trying to find one.
You can easily get a live specimen by taking a strange catch to the uttershroom.

Don't neglect to mention very late game dread surmise->Searing Enigma trading which can be done for increasing profits each trip so long as you're patient. Plus you can pass on 100% of your echo's, but only 50% of any given stat. Given you can buy secrets it's usually better to pass on huge amounts of money than any particular skill (not that you don't get 50% of two skills doing that anyway).

You can?!?

Thanks - I've played this a fair bit and didn't know that. I think I have only received a "live specimen" a total of 5 times throughout all my playthroughs (most of which ended with me "winning" by succeeding at one of the more involved goals), not including when I've just bought one from London.

The dread surmise trading is not something I generally do, since by that time I've usually got a fully kitted-out battleship with best engine and weapons, with most skills high enough to pass almost any challenge.

There are a few exceptions though, where really high scores in certain skills are required in order to achieve a certain goal with a certain outcome.

On a vaguely-related note, I hope that when Zubmariner comes out they either add a new legacy or mod an existing one so you can pass on your engine to your descendants.

Also: and this should be obvious, but is easy to forget: don't forget to downgrade your ship and sell everything you don't want to pass down to your descendents prior to ending the game (if "winning" the game). That way you get a significant chunk of extra cash to pass down, since the value of your vessel is not taken into account in your will.
