I don’t think this checkbox does anything for the GOG-Version. It’s likely just there because it is easier, to outsource only the videoassets into the DLC, but not the ingame-function.
This becomes evident, when analysing Studio FOW’s communication and the gamefiles:
- The official Studio FOW-Discord in the „subverse-faq“ section has a statement regarding the 4K that explicitly mentions Steam, but not GOG.
- The Steampage for the 4K-Video DLC states that additional 31 GB of diskspace is necessary, >on top< of the basegame.
- The Steampage for the basegame states 40 GB as minimum requirement.
- The GOG-page for the basegame states 35,8 GB as size.
- The local files of a GOG-Subverse-installation is for me at 35.0 GB.
- The videofiles are located in the subfolders Subverse\Subverse\Content\Movies. This folder has a total size of 10.8 GB for me.
- I did not check all individual videofiles. But those I checked, had a resolution of 1920x810, so definetly not 4K.
In conclusion the current Subverse-basegame on gog does not include the 4K videos.
It would also be very surprising, if the 4K-videos are a sepatate DLC on Steam, but not on GOG. I think it would be easier to work on both platforms with an identical model.
I could not find a statement, that the 4K-videos will not be released on GOG. So in good faith, we could assume there are other reasons for the delay and the DLC will eventually be released on GOG. But there also is no statement confirming that it will be available on GOG, making a purchase on Steam more attractive for some potential buyers. Those who bought in on GOG may be understandibly unhappy about this situation, probably especially those who bought it during early access, when the option of 4K-videos in the future was not even announced.
So an official statement from Studio FOW regarding this matter would definetly help to set expectations right.
