I have decided to try out Stronghold Crusader HD and I am a little bit overwhelmed where to begin. Should I start with the campaigns or the 50 linked skirmishes? Is there a suitable mission, where I can learn the basics of the game mechanics? Thanks.

The historical campaigns are the closest thing to a tutorial that Crusader has. But you must note that you just bought the standalone expansion to the original Stronghold, which had an actual dedicated tutorial, while Crusader just builds up on the mechanics of the original.
