Getting ready to start and I know the campagne is really more of an extended skirmish but my question is do things carry over from one mission to the next? By that I mean do I have to know I need a lot of a certain number of unit at the end of mission/skirmish 3 so that I don't get the crap kicked out of me at the start of mission/skirmish 4?

No, you pretty much start fresh on each scenario.
