I am still a new player to Stronghold HD. Halfway through the military campaign at the moment. I am wondering if there are any tricks or rules of thumb regarding food and population. In some strategy games having more population is always good, while in others you need to keep your growth controlled or you'll corner yourself into a hard situation. I am trying to determine what kind Stronghold is.

Is it always a good idea to maximize food production and therefore population? Is there a resource as important as food in the early game (maybe wood)? Are there any downsides to growing your population as much as possible, or should I always strive for having more peasants than my rivals?

You should only have enough population to fill in the workshops/facilities/farms etc. and have a few extras for armies. So it really depends on how much you've expanded. Having 30 peasants waiting for a job won't help you in anything except emergency army spams, but they do bring in gold when you set taxes...

If you've got the food to support them, more population means more workers means more resources at your disposal. Food is relatively easy to produce (especially if you're using bread, which produces much higher yields than the alternatives), and it's not hard to build additional taverns and chapels to keep up with your population.

The biggest problem with bigger populations is that it makes your castle bigger, requiring you to build more walls and have more defenders to cover the area. You really don't want to have any significant infrastructure outside of your walls (generally just woodcutters, whose workplaces are very inexpensive), because even a relatively small probing attack will trash everything.

In terms of resources, wood is top priority because all other workplaces require wood. Then food to feed your people, then stone and weapon production.
