DrIstvaan: 2. I do so like building in free build mode!
Also, you CAN trigger an attack there- hit F1 and call an invasion force.

overread: Life just got a whole lot better :)
I guess its because I hate reading PDFs and can nomrally work out game controls, plus most manuals these days are so thin in details that they are not worth reading!

No problem; I don't think it's in the manual, anyway. I discovered it accidentally, when once I hit F1 instead of Esc... :-D.

I dunno, I've never had much problem with this game. It's a complete blast, and one of my all-time favorites for its economic chain and defensive concentration. There are definitely hard unit counters, though, so it's not uncommon to lose a horde of one type of unit against a few units that are built to destroy that unit type without scratching them.
It definitely IS unbalanced at points, and I think it was designed that way. One of my favorite parts of the game is going back and figuring out how NOT to get my arse kicked this time around.

Well, if you want an easy way out of most missions, take advantage of some of the glitches in the game.
For example, the AI will just cjharge directly for your keep in the shortest route possible. Hence, you can intentionally leave a wall space open, then close it when the enemy gets near (not too near or you're not allowed to build though), and reopen a space on the other side of the wall, basically bouncing the enemy infantry around the map until your ranged units have picked them off.
You can also design some pretty amusing gauntlets-o-death this way, which spruces up some of the more defensively oriented missions.
One of my favorite strategies is to build a tower near the enemy's entrance point (as close as allowed), put a bunch of archers in it (you have to build stairs to the tower), and cut off the bottom block of stairs with the delete tool so that enemies can't get up them. This is just the basic form of that 'outpost' strategy, and i've ended up building huge defensive castles right next to the enemy in missions that are long enough. I'd try that out if you're having problems, it helped me out alot.

I have done both - great fun to be had!
esp on the larger and longer maps with the forward castles - so much fun building it up quick and moving troops out there - larger battle maps are something that with a competant AI or human opponent would be massive fun in this game
Shit's genious, archers won't get raped by a bunch of macemen.
