In Stronghold GOG version those Crossbow men just KEEP SHOOTINGON THE GROUND close right in front of them if their targets are far away or high up on towers, making beating the final level IMPOSSIBLE without cheating.

And there is NO such bug in the original retail one.

This is not GOG fault. See the readme file:

Version 1.2 - Problems Fixed
When attacking an enemy castle (during a single player game) you can no longer use ‘attack here’ to kill the enemy archers on towers at a distance without taking any damage.
