EDIT: Never mind, I found that your link to download offline installers for the DLC is broken, when done from GOG.com. I tried GOG Galaxy 2.0 which downloaded it correctly as a 5mb .EXE file. I tried download the DLC 3 times from GOG.com directly, and I kept getting a ~100 kb .PKG file.

Thanks for giving us all the ability to actually own what we buy. Death to DRM!

:-)

FORGET THIS, ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
"So I have a .PKG file I can't do anything with. How do I get the extra characters? Where do I put this file or what else am I supposed to do with it?

Thanks."

In the browser, on the game's tab in your account, in the top left, switch the system to Mac, then back to Windows and the link should be to a correct .exe file after that. Don't know why that happens.

Thank you for the advice, it's nice to just to do a quick one-off download straight from the browser sometimes. Now I am smarter!

turnbasedfan:
I hear you - I never used the original Galaxy, always made do with the simpler Downloader for really large files. Still, I am warming up to Galaxy 2.0, at least it makes keeping my games updated a bit easier. The only thing I wish is that there was a "Backup All Games" option or something, as I like having an offline backup of everything and 225 games gets to be a hassle when clicking downloads one at a time!

I was restricted to 56k dialup until 2012 due to geographical location, and I never take internet access as a given. That's the reason for my preference for offline backups. AND I have never forgotten the *weeks* it took me to download Half Life 2 over Steam on that dialup connection so many years ago... eek! No offline backups with Steam, that's for sure!

I'm coming late here, just to add that it should be possible to have offline backups on Steam for almost all games (albeit still needing online activation for many), since it's possible to access software depots and download the packages directly, from the Steam client console.

Tbh I never tried to download the files and then install, but I wouldn't be surprised that tutorials exist...

That being said I run the Steam client on Linux only and with restrictions, and it's an absolute no-go on Windows.
Well, NovHak, I have numerous Steam-exclusive games but the backup process is onerous and frankly useless: you still need Steam and the internet. And I was referring to the state of not having useable internet *at all*.

The process makes a big compressed encrypted blob of a file that Steam will apparently read and restore files from, but it's not game executables you can actually use, and you need an internet connection to boot up Steam from a desktop install to check your credentials for first-time login.

And just this morning the cloud server for Amazon, Reddit, CNN, Paypal, and others went down. Very vulnerable, makes me nervous.
Yea, I hate clouds, and I miss the old sunny times where it was possible to LAN with friends, and play without corporate scrutiny each and every time. Even on GOG it's not always possible any more, despite it being one of the least cloudy platforms.

I too don't feel 100% secure with the few games I have on Steam, for the reason you mentioned, as well as the risk of the Steam client becoming too invasive on Linux in the future, which means I would have to stop using it.

And after all, what's the point of having backups if not being to download essentially means you won't be able to play either ? It can save the download time, but that's all...
