Hello all,
Finally got around to playing this, and everything is working perfectly, but there is no music right now (I'm just wandering around at the very beginning of the game). Is that normal? Does music only start up later? Or is something wrong with my sound setup?
Sound effects and voice are fine.
Thanks!
Edit:
OK I played some more and haven't heard any music at all, so I assume the MIDI is not working. I tried running the setup.exe that comes with the game (both in Windows and running it through DOSBox) and it doesn't work. I get an error saying "HMI drivers not present in current directory." Anyone know what that means? I changed the install directory from the default, could that be part of the problem? Or the fact that the install directory is more than 8 characters (in DOSBox it gets listed as STONEK~1 because it's too long)?
Thanks again.

Editing my post didn't bump the thread, so I'm putting this in a new post:
I tried installing to the default directory that the GOG installer points to, but that didn't change anything, I still get the HMI driver error when trying to run the sound setup program. I'm wondering if this is some sort of DOSBox issue... I did NOT install the version of DOSBox that came with the GOG download, I already had DOSBox v0.73 installed and I just pointed to it when installing Stonekeep. Could that affect things?
Any insight is appreciated. Thanks!
dunno. I recall it worked fine last time I played it.
You are sure that it doesn't work without you modifying a thing (e.g default install of GOG) ?
Yes, the only thing different from the default install of GOG is that I have DOSBox already installed, so I just point the GOG installer to my DOSBox directory. I have not tried installing DOSBox through the GOG installer, maybe that's the issue? I decided to install DOSBox directly to make sure I had the latest version, as I wasn't sure if the version included with GOG's version of Stonekeep was the latest, given that Stonekeep has been out on GOG for a while now.
Googling provides this thread about the same problem with Stonekeep:
http://www.dosgames.com/forum/about12063-0-asc-0.html
But I can't figure out whether any of that will help me. It sounds like the advice was to take certain steps when running the installer from the original CD of Stonekeep, which does not apply to the GOG version since GOG has their own installer.
Anyway, despite being unable to run the setup program, I have sound and voice working fine, just no music, so it's not a HUGE deal, but it would be nice to get the music working. Do you know if there's some DOSBox settings I might try that could get the MIDI going?
I suppose this evening I could try uninstalling DOSBox and then installing it again through the GOG installer to see if that fixes the problem.
Thanks again.
OK, so I tried uninstalling DOSBox and just using everything on the default settings from the GOG installer. So I used the GOG installer to install the game and DOSBox (it is v0.73, by the way) to the default directories. No change... still no music in-game and I get the same error if I try to run the setup program, whether through Windows or in DOSBox.
By the way, is it true that you are one of the developers of DOSBox, Qbix? If so, I just wanted to say that it's a fantastic program. I used it to play System Shock earlier this year and it worked fabulously. Thanks for taking time to help me with my tiny Stonekeep problem!
As its a dosbox program I think there should be a .conf file in the games folder with the setup options in it that you can open with notepad. If it does excist have a look in there for the sound options.

Thanks Ralackk. There is indeed a .conf file, but I'm not sure what to alter to make things work. Here are my current (default) .conf settings for sound:
[mixer]
nosound=false
rate=22050
blocksize=2048
prebuffer=10
[midi]
mpu401=intelligent
device=default
config=
[sblaster]
sbtype=sb16
sbbase=220
irq=7
dma=1
hdma=5
mixer=true
oplmode=auto
oplrate=22050
[gus]
gus=true
gusrate=22050
gusbase=240
irq1=5
irq2=5
dma1=3
dma2=3
ultradir=C:\ULTRASND
[speaker]
pcspeaker=true
pcrate=22050
tandy=auto
tandyrate=22050
disney=true
Any insights would be great. I'm guessing any problems would be in the [midi] section; maybe it's that empty config line?
The DOSBox readme says that the first thing to do with sound problems is make sure that the game has sound set up correctly, but I can't do this because I can't run setup.exe, so that was my main concern. If I can fix it through the .conf file though that would be great. Any insights?
Thanks again.
I know it's probably too late for the original poster, but I just solved a similar issue.
I was trying to run Stonekeep from the "Ultimate RPG Archives" natively without DOSBox on my Win98 machine.
(It's only a PIII, so DOSBox is too slow)
Anyway the solution was that I had to enable an option like "Legacy Sound Support for MIDI" in the BIOS(!) of my computer.
Maybe that's helping others trying to enjoy this game :)
