I've just "rescued" the dwarf (I have no idea how to control both characters together so just wildly click R and L mouse buttons when attacked!) but now when I flick through the journal to try to read the stats the game just stops.
Any suggestions?

You dont control NPC characters, they will just automatically attack and occasionally use their special abilities.
As for the crash try loading an earlier save game, the game has its share of bugs.
