Well, it's not. If you have the original game and can get it to run, there's no reason to get it from GOG (or anywhere, really).
Protip: If you have a game and it works, don't buy it again :P

I'm not really DOSBOX savvy, but I'm willing to trust that the support community here is going to help me get things going.
We're all here to get in on the classic gaming goodness. I don't want to screw around with torrents / warez sites if I can support a business model that increases classic game availability. I think that many of you people probably feel the same as me.
I'm saying all of this because I want people like the OP to know that if you have a good attitude, you'll realize that you are among friends here.
And having just bought Stonekeep, I'm going to see if I can get it to run, and if not, I'll be back :)

Yes, I would rather pay for a game if I can. That is the good thing about this site. A lot of these games aren't available anywhere else outside of torrents and warez.

That's why I'm excited about GoG. I have no problems with DosBox. If it weren't for DosBox, I'd still be relying on my super old Win 95 computer to play Crusader.
However, if I never bought the game in the first place (i.e. Planescape: Torment and System Shock), the service GoG offers is a great solution.

ive just learnt of this aswell.
i thought the executable files had been modified to remove disk checking and to allow functionality on modern operating systems.
i didnt expect the programs to just use a freeware app called dosbox (which is problematic at best and gives differing results on different speed machines) to run.
i expect more work done. i could have easily done stonekeep myself with dosbox, and even though the work has been done for me ive still got to fiddle with config files to get it working correctly.
edit - it appears my initial frustrations were unfounded. stonekeep appears to work fairly well with no modification of dosbox settings.
the entire dosbox experience is transparent and you are hard pushed to even know the game is running using an 'emulator'

What are these posters moaning about?
If you want to spend hours fiddling about with DosBox, D-Fend reloaded and all the other emulating paraphenalia then by all means get on with it.
If, however, you'd prefer spend the time playing some rather good games that play how they were meant to then send GOG some cash and get on with enjoying them.
I write from bitter experience of trying to get abandoned games to run on Vista using the above emulators and getting varying results (mostly frustrating and disappointing).
Personally I couldn't care less if the games are emulated using an old stick and a piece of string provided they work properly.
I am more than happy to let GOG do the twiddly bits for which I will pay a fair price.
I use a similar principle by going to a petrol station rather than drilling for oil and shopping at a supermarket rather than hunting for food.
It never ceases to amaze me how many PC owners are happy to spend tons of cash on their systems but throw a complete wobbler when asked for relatively minimal amounts of money for things to make the hardware actually do anything.
