In order to get as much cash as possible and the best ship, I racked out missions after missions, picking the most difficult to get as much cash as possible and, also, experience. My character is now at level 80, fleet admiral, and it seems that I can no longer gain experience. This is a bummer since I can no longer increase skills and perks and some missions are rated "Level 108 recommended". Is this a bug or is there a maximum experience in that game?

Level 80 is maximum level. You cannot gain experience after that. When you see, for example lvl 108 recommended, it's similar like in World of Warcraft. It means that if you just hit lvl 80 and didn't invest in the new ship, enhancements, weapons and/or officers and high level mercenaries, that it might be a problem to kill that enemy (or enemies if there are more of them). If your setup is good, you shouldn't have any problems with those missions. And since you're level 80 it means you know how to play so I don't doubt you're skillfull enough to beat those targets.

But yes, to answer your question, lvl 80 is the maximum level in Starpoint Gemini 2. You cannot gain experience and skills/perks after lvl 80.
