Hi there, when I try to run this game with 2sai I get horrible lag and when I try to set it back to the way it was, the screen shrinks. Anyone know a solution?
There is a lot of info on how to tweak Dosbox in the Dosbox Wiki and on the Vogons forum.
A little tip I can give you is that when you use custom resolutions, surface output will only occupy a small square of the screen, you can get around that by using a different output, overlay is the fastest I think.
ddraw or opengl will actually use your graphics card as oppose to entirely on the cpu, so either that is the fastest.

If you get it on mac, the gog already uses boxer, which takes out all the SDL stuff and uses MacOS specific calls which is inherently faster for Mac

Or if you have windows, I always recommend taewong's build which is faster then standard dosbox, and has direct3d render.

I'm having enough trouble just getting it to play without crashing. It happens whenever I select a mission.
It's a shame, I really miss this game.

Relevant specs: Win XP, Pentium 4, Radeon HD 4650 (AGP), SB Audigy2

The problem is most likely your cpu. It is way too old to run a poweful, cpu intensive emulator like dosbox with any efficiency. In fact you may be better running the program itself straight up, throttling your cpu and using something like VMSound to emulate an older sounblaster card that it can use.

Of course all of this depends on the game, but the thing is star gunner needs an awful lot from the emulator to get it up to speed.

I don't think his CPU is the problem. My old 1.6 GHz Pentium M laptop can run Stargunner in Dosbox with super speed.

I recommend testing changes to StargunDOSBOX.conf file in the game's folder. For example trying changing output to ddraw.

Also you could try updating the game. The version in GOG is unpatched 1.0b version. 1.1a is the latest:

1.1 registered patch can be applied to the GOG version.
For starters a Pentium M is newer and faster then a Pentium IV, but it really depends on the program Dosbox is running. Stargunner for what ever reason takes an awful lot out of dosbox. Switching to ddraw or opengl render might give some improvement as it puts some of the load off of the CPU and on to the GPU. Also cpu intensive things like double buffer is false and scaler set to normal2x. You can also try Taewong's build of dosbox which has some speed improvements and a directx render.

GOG hasn't updated the game for a reason.
I'll fiddle with the .conf file settings soon. I doubt my CPU is the problem, I've never had DOSBox issues before.
