Hi, after logo screen game says; The, Game in progress but not saved and closed.

Using windows 8 any information about that? Thanks!
This is an error message you get if you quit without saving, due to the way the game was developed to work. As you play, the game itself actively modifies its own game data, with some changes being done straight away, and others being kept in system memory. All saving does is ensure that all the changes are physically written to the drive. The result of this is that if you ever quit without saving, you're left with a corrupted version of the game.

Unless you've kept backups of the games files (which is unlikely, seeing as this is an issue most only find out about after they've quit without saving), your only option is to choose the "Reset and Start Game" option in the Start Menu (run it as administrator, just in case), make sure you choose the "Save and Quit" option in future playthroughs, and make a backup copy of your game files each time you finish playing. Specifically, make copies of the STARA.COM and STARB.COM files, found in the C:\GOG Games\Starflight 1 and 2\Starflight 1\STARFLT\PLAY folder (if you installed to default).

Thanks for answer
The reset option didn't worked for me.
I replaced the stara.com and starb.com in the play folder with the original from the start folder.
Great game, besides.

The problem is that Starflight 1 doesn't have a save and quit feature, only Starflight 2 comes bundled with a saving system.

It does, it's just that it doesn't function in the same way we'd expect it to, due to the way it was programmed to get around hardware limitations of the time. In the pause menu, there are a few options, two of them being "Save and Quit" (or something along those lines), and "Quit Without Saving".

Whenever I hit escape, it doesn't take me to the pause menu.

Are you sure? I just tested on a brand new save. Pressed the Esc key, and after waiting 5 - 10 seconds, this screen appeared.

where do I find all the game's controls?
I'm running into the same thing, but when I push escape it just exits. I have to uninstall and reinstall whenever this happens.

Any ideas how to work around it?

Thanks!

Ok so how do you load your game? When I start I get the error message that game exists but is not saved...

As mentioned, that means you exited without saving and now the files are horked. To fix it you can run the shortcut called something like "Restart game" or go to where you installed Starflight and look for the START folder; copy all those files to the PLAY folder (copy, don't move, so you can restore again if you hork your save again).

Ok forgive me for not understanding...
So if it "horks" I need to hit reset game, ok. But then I go into the start folder and copy them all to the play.. and that will bring back the last saved game so I wont lose anything?

P.S. Im on a mac...

thank you

Your save is ruined. There's no way to go back; you need to restart from the beginning. I gave you two ways to restart the game; you only need to do one of them.
