Hi all, just a quick question: How much time do I have to complete the quest? Is there a specific date that marks the end? Can I afford wasting time on experimentation, or do I have to be really efficient?

You can get this question if you are communicating with the Elowan:

The sun of the planet thou call'st Arth shall flare in the final week of your ten-month of this year, so we have ascertained.
The year is 10 months of thirty days each, or 300 days. If you have not finished your quest at the beginning of the next year, then Arth is destroyed. You can still continue to play but you will not have a base to go back to.

More detailed information:
The line starts at x=200. Every four days, it moves back one. So at 300 days, the line is at x=125. You will see warnings when it is coming close. Your sensor will tell you how many days to flare.
Thanks. I actually met the Elowan yesterday, and got that message.

I'm on the third month already, so I guess I'd better start being a bit efficient. OTOH, I don't think I need to spend much more time mining and such. And with the help of the starmap I'm getting better at using those fluxes to cut down travel time.

Once you've maxed out your ship and crew upgrades, mining becomes almost unnecessary. You can get fuel and repair materials easily by destroying Gazurtoid ships. At that point your goal should be to talk to aliens about each other to try and piece together the main plot puzzle, and collect artifacts.

Although 1 game year does not seem like a long time, once you're done strip mining every single planet and mapped many fluxes, the game speeds up dramatically and you'll be making solid progress. Then you'll bump into a Uhlek battle group and wish you were back at Starport cuddling in your bed!
