Hi there.

I'd like to suggest that GOG might want to write up a technical support guide for using this game. There are quite a few potential complications that affect ability to play the game, including but not limited to graphics type selection, running the DOSbox in Administrator mode, and how to deal with saving the game. I myself have not figured out how to do that yet, and I frequently get messages saying that I need to insert a disk. These are of course relic issues from the original code, which probably should have been stripped out of the game. But if that is not easily possible, at least provide advice on how to get around it.

By the way -- I am extremely excited to be playing these older games and very happy that GOG is offering them. I recognize how difficult it is to take something like this and re-package it for a modern computer, and just wanted to say that any problems are in no way giving me a negative view of your group!

Best,

~Wil
I must agree. Usually its download and play with the games I've purchased from GOG, but both Starflights have several problems right from the start. I've had to reinstall the pair numerious times mostly because of SF1 not loading an unsaved game, even though it says "quit without saving". These are great games.............when they get them running correctly.
I've had quite a few problems with quitting without saving in other games and when I go back to load my game again the unsaved file is not there so I know how it is.

To GOGs credit I've been playing SF2 for the past few days and it works just fine. It is still all the fun I remember.
I am very frustrated with SF 1. When I finally figured out how to get the game working through the Tools folder, then through the SF 1 icon, I can save the game, BUT when I accidentally got "killed", there is no way to restart the game from an earlier stage. I need to know how to save the game in such a way that I don't have to completely go back to the beginning and start over. It says to save to floppy disc. My computer does not have a floppy drive and the "save" does not even give me that option. Any suggestions or help????

Thank you.
The starflight files change as you play the game, so you cannot go back to an earlier point in the game, and the game itself only lets you save the current universe. One way of dealing with this is to manually copy your game files every time you quit the game (Save & Quit). Then go to your "Starflight 1 and 2/Starflight 1/Starflt/Play" folder, copy all of the files, and place that copy into the "Save" folder. If you ever need to go back to that point in the game, you can then move all of those files back into the "Play" folder. And if necessary, you can set up multiple save folders for multiple saves. A bit of work, but it protects against sudden disasters in the game. Good luck.

I'd recommend to change the security settings for your GOG folder to allow not only administrators to write, since on GOG there are a lot of games that insist on saving into the game folder and they are not really vital files of your PC that need to be protected.
For anyone needing technical assistance and looking for further info on the game point your web browser to www.starflt.com. It's been around along while and has helpful tips on getting it going and working with dosbox. Also lots of resources on the entire Starflight universe, history, and playing.
