rich12545: Just got the game(s) and installed. Figured out I MUST press [5 EGA] for it to work. But it looks like I have to press it every time?
Yes, DOS games before VESA/VGA cards were the standard gave you a prompt to choose the video type. Some could be entered by using a switch appended to the executable, Starflight is not one of those cases.
rich12545: Main problem is once I get beyond the two main pages I get some sort of police warning of piracy or some such and then it says that the game is in progress but not saved, press any key to exit. So I press a key and poof I'm out of the game. Of course I never started a game so it couldn't be in progress.
You are talking about two separate things: the text screen that comes after the two intro screens is just the standard piracy disclaimer thingy all games used to have, with a plus of humor.
Afterwards, the game loads the game in progress,
unless you pressed 9 (exit without saving) at the menu that appears when you press the escape key while in-game. Whether you actually did this or not is inconsecuential: your copy of the game now recognizes, for whatever reason, that no game was saved the last time it was run and cannot continue until it is reset or a previously saved game is restored.
For you, the only way to start a new game (without messing around with the game's batch files or a custom save game system) is simply using one of the shortcuts that the GOG installer creates in your Windows programs menu. It is the one that mentions "Reset...". This executes a DOSBox config file separated from the one executed by the regular game shortcut. That config file in turn executes the game reset batch file (restoring the game to the very beginning) and then the game itself.
If you want to use a save game system similar to the one on Starflight 2, you need to make some modifications. See this topic:
http://www.gog.com/en/forum/starflight/is_there_a_way_to_back_up_starflight_1_in_windows_7 In there, you can find a fanmade modified version of the Starflight 2 save game system, and later a batch file I made to fulfill the same role. You must have save game backups, if you don't, any interruption of the game will leave you without any other choice than starting from the beginning.
If you don't want to use either of the save systems mentioned in the topic above, you can simply copy the files with the .COM extension found in the folder "/Starflight 1/STARFLT/PLAY" within the folder where the game was installed, to a secure location every time you exit the game (choosing option 1 at the escape menu). If, at some point, you want to restore that game simply copy those backed up files to the PLAY directory overwriting the current files.
If, after you get the game going, you encounter problems with game speed, see my post here:
