I'm interested in starting with Starflight 1, it looks like an amazing game.

I'm also curious about the replayability of the Starflight series, do I understand correctly that the game is in a set, static galaxy. Will each game be unique enough to justify multiple play throughs? What do you do to maximise replay value?

P.S. Bonus question: What are some other games similar to Starflight that you would recommend, on and off GOG?

Personally, I think it is replayable more for nostolgia, so replayablility is not really that good. I beat Starflight in 1989 and Starflight 2 in 1992, and have very fond memories of avoiding homework playing these games. But yes, the locations in the galaxy are fixed for the really notable ones. Therefore it is not like you will find the Ancient's Homeworld anywhere else than on the planet it is set at. The real random things are the spaceship encounters and the lifeforms on the planets. The "solution" to both games is pretty linear.

If I am remembering correctly, Star Control 2 and Masters of Orion 2 were kind of similar (please don' t flame me if I got this wrong, 24 years ago and hundreds of games later...) But as far as the explore a galaxy of star systems and have exploration away missions on the surface of survivable (you can't land on Gas Giants for instance and heavy gravity can hurt you) planets, I don't think there was ever another exactly like these two. The Mass Effect series kinda-almost-but-not-really did it again...notably, Electronic Arts distributed both game series.
Replayability? ahahhahah. I've been replaying for 31 years! Best game ever.
i remember first played starflight 1 maybe a few years ago, i downloaded freely online but because of the difficulty and the complicated save system, i didnt played long...

now i bought the game from GOG , and i do the backup saves to keep the save files , without that, i really think i could not invest in a game which any time you screwed up hard, you have to start from beggining.

even playing with backup saves , i still have hard time to progress in the game , for example , the combat is pretty hard, i never won a fight before.
Most space 4x and even RPG's tend to have a linear campaign, but then you have 100's of hours of exploring. People are playing Starcraft still (like me!) just like they're still playing Skyrim for the exploration and the side quests, despite having finished the main quest.
You might check out this thread for a list of similar games.

As far as replayability is concerned, imo the only 'replayable' aspect is to try and improve the time it takes to win. However, there are so many similar games now, including open source ones with fan-made content (see link above), you can get your 'starflight-fix' along with a new experience by simply playing them all!
