I plan on updating my child's game to 1.5. Do I need to do anything special to keep their existing save files?

Also, where are they kept if I want to back them up first?

Don't worry old save files work with 1.5

Also if you are still worried and want to back up your save files they are located here

%APPDATA%\StardewValley\Saves\
