I keep my slimes near Grandpa's Shrine, it was okay until I bred slimes outside. Not totally sure how they got there, but I can't kill them, even with the slingshot. Not gonna try bombs.

I tried to breed slimes outside in a pen once. They had a tendency to vanish within a day or two.
