I noticed an empty spot where a crop was planted, despite there being a scarecrow in range (possibly more than one in fact, since I wanted to make sure everything's covered, and their fields of influence are likely interlocking). Is it possible that despite the scarecrow, a bird got there anyway? (also do birds come to feed on the plants that are still growing?)

The only other explanation I can think of is that I just forgot to sow/plant that spot, but I'm fairly sure I didn't, hence looking in what could have caused the crop to disappear. (it didn't die for lack of water, as I have sprinklers, so it's not that)

That is WEIRD! XD First I've ever heard of that.

Did you check for any weeds near the crops?
Scarecrows are 100% effective.

It's far more likely that your crop got struck by lightning.
No weeds (I cleared the area first day of the season, and besides, it was in the middle of a field among other crops, if it was weed destroying it, one at the edge would be lost).

No lightning either - aside from my farm having a good amount of Lightning Rods (about 10 or 11 I think), there was no storm since the season started (it's only day 5 or so into the season).

I guess I might have really missed that one spot, when sowing the crops, oh well, one less Starfruit won't kill me.
(besides, I got some reserve space somewhere to plant one and get it "back")

What's the exact range of scarecrow anyway, is the Stardew Valley's wiki accurate there?

I recall reading somewhere, that the Scarecrow's range was reduced, but no idea, if the Wiki's page reflects its new range or the old one.
8 tiles radius, it was reduced from 20 back in version 1.03.

Shame the other scarecrows are only visual, would be good to have the basic model have a lower range.
As you climb the scarecrow tree, go up to 10 or so squares.....but hey it doesn't.
