1. Have medkits, especially at first. You don’t strictly need them if you are careful but having them makes life easier. Overload used to deal much more damage that it is now.
2. Void energy decreases with time outside of combat.
3. At first in mob battles it makes sense sometimes to use Strike if you have too much void energy and don’t want to overload. For example, with middle tree Ignite, although great, is only useful against those that have shields, so it might be tempting to use the only other thing you have – Shadowbolt, but it gathers energy…
3. You can only overload when you gather energy. Spending it has no chance to overload in my experience (and that’s a good thing). Which means don’t gather too much of it unless you need it/have something to spend it on. You don’t really need to be at full energy in a mob fight.
I don’t think gathering from passive abilties can make you overload either, but I’m not sure yet. At least it didn’t happen before.
4. Somewhere up the middle tree there is a Backlash ability. You want it. Preferable targets for it are tough low dodge enemies.
5. Torrent/Voidstorm allow you to dump all of your energy should you have nothing useful to spend it on.
6. Psi Blade from the left tree boosts your Strike when you gather void energy. Which you might find interesting… later.
7. Misery from the right tree might be of interest as well.
Oh, and having some Leech Nanites (accessory) also helps.
And another one, Force Psyker’s Mirror Prism can take on overload damage (resist applies).
