Seriously?! First I get a mail from gog saying that Starbound was discounted, but I don't see anything like this. now you tell us that we can't even download mods from steamworkshop? You gotta be kidding me. For which damn reason should I buy it from GOG, if the Steam version is already DRM-free? (you can simply put the game folder on a usb and play like nothing).

eh it just got released, I am going to chalk it up as they can't find the toggle switch.
Sorry, steam workshop is the only way to get to install and use mods in Starbound? it's like that?

I think so, at least to the majority of them, unless there are some avaiable on Chucklefish forum.
You can get mods from Chucklefish like Gurlok said and you have a mod manager integrated to the game.
Steam is DRM in itself, so DRM free means no Steam Workshop of course. You can blame Valve for founding that service.
Hmm, i see.

Yesterday i downloaded a spanish translation mod (WIP) for my wife 'cause we play together and she doesn't understand english. I got it from Chuclefish forums and installed it by just creating a "mods" folder in .../galaxyclient/games/mods/ and putting the files there.

I have steam, but i have to admit that never entered a game's workshop. When someone makes a mod using steam workshop, it's only available thru there? that's a shame.

Just to point out mods were available on the forum long before steam and most authors still post on the forums dedicated mod service.

also nexus mods has a section dedicated to starbound they want you to use their downloader, but most starbound files are so small you can just use the direct downloads without even getting an account.
17 pages of mods & counting...
Can manually install or use their client.

Also as others have said, you can grab mods directly from the games own forums too.
