Something I've been messing around with this evening - for all you X-WING nuts out there!

I was a bit curious after hearing about the improvements in the MAC version of X-WING... (640x480, shading, iMuse)

As you can see from the screenshots - it works! (under Windows 7 x64)

But don't get too excited; it runs at a snails pace ='(

(Newer) MAC owners may get more mileage.

The pilot/hangar menu's look similar to the '95 release - not sure if I like the cartoony look.

But it looks far better in action than the DOS Collectors version.

TIE FIGHTER complains about the CD - but I'm sure there's a work-around. (not that you need it - DOS '95 Collectors)

EDIT: Picture post limit - A few more pictures!

I forget what it required to get it to recognize the CD in Tie Fighter. It may have needed locking the image or mounted disk. But I don't remember if that was it or something else it's been a while since I used a version of Sheepshaver on OS X(I thought it was a bleepin' pain to get working on windows because of the GTK+ requirements though.) I also think it was a little choppy at the time. But then again I have a 1 GHz G3 that can boot into OS 8.6/9. where it runs perfectly.

The best version of sheepshaver is at emaculation.com forums. That said the OSX version is indeed a little better then the Windows version in millage, but due some direct draw limitation, it does indeed run at a snails pace in all cases. Crying shame.

I'll seen a virtual drive tool mentioned that runs on OS 9.

I'm using images in toast format, mounted as drives through sheepshaver. I'll have to try copying the images directly into the machine and mounting them through that tool.

The trickiest part was finding an old 9.04 install iso ;) There's an installer for GTK; the other files (rom) are included in the zip.

I'm amazed it all works really - I haven't seen one of these ancient macs since high school, about 15 years ago!

I grabbed that one from the forum - build date of 2013. I suppose I'd have to compile it myself if I wanted anything newer? If there is anything newer...the project looks dead :'(

Close Combat 2 suffers from direct draw slowdown; solved with close combat starter...

Like that game, I wonder if killing off explorer.exe will solve it? I'll try that later ;)

Got TIE FIGHTER working.

The process involves mounting the tiefighter.toast image in a virtual drive inside of the virtual machine using virtualdvd romcd utility

Unfortunately killing off explorer.exe doesn't seem to have any effect on the dreadful performance ='(

Sheepshaver has been effectively dead for years. Every once in a while someone comes out of the woodwork for a minor bug fix or make a promise to add direly needed upgrades like mmu, but nothing serious has ever been added.

I went through the same thing as the OP a few months back, and got the same results. Neither X-Wing nor TIE Fighter run fast enough in Sheepshaver or BasiliskII to be usable.

It's a real shame, but not surprising. The Macintosh versions are truly the most epic versions of these games ever released. It's worth to find a late 90s PPC based Mac on Ebay just to play those two games :)
Don't forget your Gravis Mousestick II !
