Hey guys,

I'm new to flight sims in general and just downloaded X-Wing (1993). My problem is that I can't figure out how the two minimaps work, and because of this I can't really find enemy ships. I'm stuck on the first Tour mission; I have a good attack run against the freighters but once I get past them I can't seem to find them again. The M key map is not a help since it is just a two dimensional display that doesn't even indicate my bearing.

Basically, what I am not getting about the minimaps and target tracking systems?

Thanks in advance! :)
You have to target the freighters via the T-key.
The left circle is the forward scanner and the right circle is the aft one. If the targeted ship, highlighed by brackets, is on the center of the left circle, the target is in front of you. If it is for example on the north-eastern position on the left circle, you have to steer your craft diagonally up and right until you have the target in front of you.
FekLeyrTarg is correct. Dots that appear in the center of the left circle are directly in front of you, dots that appear in the center of the right circle are directly behind you. Dots near the edges are sideways from you, either to the left or right, or above or below. If you target a ship, you'll see brackets around it on these scanners, then you want to move it into the center of the left circle so you are facing it and can shoot at it. Typically this means turning in one direction until the target is in front of you; if it's also trying to evade then it will be tricky to get it in your sights.

Try targeting something and try to maneuver it into your sights, and you'll quickly get the hang of how these displays show you where the targets are. You'll get a "feel" for it and will know exactly how to fly so the ship comes into view.

Also (I'm not sure if this is true in X-Wing, but it's true in TIE Fighter), dots will be dimmer when the target is far away, and brighter when they are close. You can always check distance to your currently targeted ship in the HUD display in the center too.

Thanks guys! Think I got it figured it. I'm so used to clock face style radar minimaps that it threw me for a loop.
Also you might want to play a later version like the CD or 98. It is easier to see ships in those.
