I'm currently experiencing CTDs. They're occurring randomly and I can't really find out why.
Happens during flight, while loading or ending a mission, even on the cruiser concourse. There's no plausible pattern. And it's really annoying when it happens late in a mission you've been putting a lot of sweat into. Happend more than once.

Anyone else having a similar problem?

I'm using
- the first GOG version and
- manually added the improved ddraw.dll,
- deactivated AA and AF
- installed XWAU for crafts and backdrops
- plus widescreen and font hack

I take it you installed the XWAU craft individually? I had a similar issue. The game runs just fine with no XWAU ships installed so it's something about that many new ship models running at once.

I used to have that issue with the disc based version as well, I found if I ran the game directly as admin it went fine
right click the desktop shortcut, click open file location
find the games exe (XWINGALLIANCE), not the launcher
right click, run as administrator
and it should be fine, I would still get the odd CTD, but it was like 2/10 times

you guys were probably both right.
reinstalled xwa without any mods (except widescreen), played a couple of missions, no problems so far.
although i have to say not being able to use the XWAU craft pack is unfortunate, they did great work on that.
thanks anyway for your hints!
I had a similar issue.

After installing XWAU mod and widescreen, I needed to set the compatibility of "XWINGALLIANCE.EXE" to windows XP SP2 mode. (That's the main game executable, not "Alliance.exe" which is the launcher).

I've been playing without issue since then.

Each time you change settings via the widescreen patcher, you'll need to re-apply the compatibility mode.

You also need to run the game via the desktop short-cuts, not the .exe directly.
