Is it mandatory to take out the laser thing? I've run this mission 20 times and still no success, just trying to see if I can do it a bit quicker and leave that part out.

And, if it IS mandatory, I need to do a U-turn as soon as I destroy it, right?

No, it's not mandatory. Just a Bonus objective.

And yes, if you try to destroy it you need to go back to where you did come once it's down, until you reach the intersection. While you are on the laser area, stay close to the walls just in case the laser fires.
