None have out of the box support for gamepads, they should be detected as generic joysticks but the additional analog axis may trigger issues since these games were made for joysticks that had 3 to 4 axes at best.
The windows versions can use this thing here:
https://github.com/rdoeffinger/xwa_ddraw_d3d11/releases/latest
It's mostly for the graphics but it has some options for gamepad compatibility or even the ability to use the mouse for flying in the games that won't run unless you have a controller plugged in.
Moreover you'd probably still need a keyboard if you can't use mappers because there are more keys that can fit into a gamepad.
The DOS versions require calibration which is very difficult to do with the circular gates gamepads have so those are completely out of the question.

Personally I think that unless you can't afford it or prefer couch play regardless I'd suggest you get a Logitech 3D Pro joystick (*) and play it the classic joystick & keyboard way. If you have some old USB joystick lying around it might work too.

(*) Note: the 3D Pro is an old model but is still sold in shops both online and brick&mortar and is reliable, some other more recent cheap models either have fancy stuff that may create issues with older games or are just a bit too big if you want to use it only occasionally and want to store it when not in use.

Thanks for the advice. just had a look and wondered would a Logitech wingman extreme 3d pro digital be suitable or does it need to be analogue? They aren't cheap are they lol

So, you already have one? Because the Logitech models with the "digital" marketing buzzword are all out of production (the current one is called simply "Logitech extreme 3D Pro"), if it's native USB it should be fine (some older models were gameport but were packed in with a USB adapter and may not work in modern windows).
Really, if it still works you don't need to buy a new one, I kept an old 4-button Saitek for my spacesim needs for more than a decade before it just stopped centering properly and became too stiff to move.

If you need to buy one and the 3D pro is only available at inflated prices (which happens unfortunately here in Europe, in the US the price is $30,00 but I often see it at € 60,00 for some reason), just pick a no frills one (sometimes they put in optionals like vibration that may cause random incompatibilities with some games even modern ones) and rather than consider the number of buttons overall mostly consider the ones on the stick itself because with games like X-wing you'll mainly need the left hand for the keyboard anyway unless you have a full HOTAS with a lot of buttons that would cost you a pretty penny.
Also many of the super cheap ones may not have twist rudder which is only supported in X-wing Alliance when it comes to Lucasarts spacesims (I think the only other Lucasarts game that supports it is Star Wars Starfighter but that is more on the action arcade side) but you may want to have it for games that support it.

No, I don't have one, I was just looking on ebay as most of the shops are still closed here.I read your reply and just bought a new old stock usb Saitek st50 boxed for £25 (about $35) so hopefully that will do the trick. I hadn't heard of Saitek until you mentioned it. Do you know that joystick? Thanks for all the help you've given

The one I had was a similar model though DO check if it's native USB like the one I had because some pictures on google show it as gameport with adapter and that has a strong chance not to work in windows from XP onwards because it relies on a gameport-to-usb protocol that has since been dropped entirely.
Saitek was one of the joystick big shot manifacturers that survived the death of the mainstream flight sims in the early 2000s, it became kind of garbage when it was aquired by MadCatz and now is part of Logitech (MadCatz sold it to them in a last attempt to capitalize before going bankrupt).
At the moment the only big mainstream manufacturer other than Logitech is Thrustmaster, the others are all either specialized manufacturers that only do premium products (CH Products, VKB, Virpil).

Well, hopefully it will work. It looks like its usb not converted. Im so old school i remember the last joystick i had was my main controller on my c64 and was a quickshot turbo back in the 80's before everything went sophisticated. Ill post on here when it arrives next week if its working or not. Thanks again
