My monitor automatically stretches to wide screen mode when booting this game. I can manually adjust the monitor to 4:3 but I was wondering if there is a way to configure this somehow within the game or perhaps other files.
Also interested in any information on changing resolution, or being able to play in windowed mode. I have an Eyefinity setup, and am trying to get it to play only on my middle monitor. I can usually do this by using windowed mode, but there is no obvious method to start the game in windowed mode, and alt+enter does not seem to work.
If you are talking about 1993 version you should make sure that the "keep aspect ration" box in advanced options tab of graphic mode settings (found in x-wing 1993 start menu folder) is checked.

Also if you have nvidia gpu you can just go to control panel and change scaling from full screen to aspect ratio. AMD aspect ration scaling has been broken for ages so, unless it has been fixed lately, AMD owners are probably out of luck as usual.
I've gone into the configurator and I can set it to play in a window, but it will only load in a very small window. Changing the Window Resolution doesn't seem to do anything.

Tried doing it via editing the config file and that didn't work either.

Any way to get the game to play in a larger window?
I'm having the same issue. I'd like to play in a windowed version or at least in some way to keep the original aspect ratio. I'd highly prefer it for the '98 version due to better graphics but it seems to lack any such options (have to play it in fullscreen, no way I can switch it to windowed) compared to the '93 version (which seems odd). Some way to do it in the '93 version would be acceptable.
To get the older versions running in windowed mode, go into the dosbox conf file and change "fullscreen" to false, and then input whatever display res you like next to "windowresolution" (be sure to change the output to ddraw, though)

As for the stretched image, I was only able to fix that by going into my monitor's OSD and changing the Image Ratio setting; your results may vary depending on what model or brand you have, though. AMD scaling settings are indeed quite broken. :\

Ah ha, changing the output to ddraw did the trick. Can stay in windowed mode and change the resolution that way. Thanks!

Now I wish I could pull the same trick with the '98 version. The lack of such options for it confuses me...

Best solution for the 1998 version is to use the scaling available in nVidia/AMD control panels and selecting GPU scaling with keeping aspect ratio intact. Worked for me on my nVidia card, can't tell what exactly you need to configure for AMD GPUs.

For AMD in the catalyst control center the option for controlling aspect ratio is under:

My Digital Flat-Panels --->Properties --->Image Scaling Preferences

Unfortunately none of these options seem to do anything, supposedly if you set your desktop resolution to a non-native resolution and then scaling will work, it didn't for me, but it's worth try. Looking around it seems AMD regularly fixes then breaks these options in their various driver updates, but if you get it to work let us know, and tell us the driver version and OS you're using. I'm using driver version 14.7 on Vista64.
