I had the joystick working when I first launched Tie Fighter 1998. Now when I launch the game I get the "plug in your joystick" message.

I've tried:
-advanced control settings "preferred controller for older games"
-windows recognises the x-56
-nothing else plugged in
-updated the drivers

Tie Fighter 1995 doesn’t recognise the joystick at all and makes the mouse cursor float all over the screen. Altogether unplayable.
-I’ve tried all the tweaks with the config file
-the in-game joystick calibration causes the game to lock up and unresponsive to any keyboard and mouse
-re-installing the game

AHHHH I just want to destroy rebel scum! Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know much about the x-56, but what does "preferred for older games" do exactly?
Keep in mind that both games only support one peripheral at a time, so no throttle piece unless you use some software trickery.
Tie95 should ask you to calibrate the joystick every time you run it, and dosbox should use your joystick, unless it recognizes the throttle as the primary windows peripheral and in that case you should go to the windows control panel and check which is the preferred peripeheral between stick and throttle.
