I am using a keyboard/joystick and cannot identify nor reassign key functions. What's worse is that the issue command function absolutely doesn't work, despite me trying every possible key combination it might potentially have been changed to. The paper manual I'm going by says that 'defend me' is (control + D) and yet that does nothing... tried option/shift/fn/tab/space + D and still nothing. Under what menu do you assign key control functions? This game is nearly impossible when you cannot order your wingmen around. Thanks in advance.

EDIT: I also tried duplicating the application so that I don't lose my pilot experience, but opening the duplicate still results in a dead/captured pilot as in the original. If anyone knows where the game data is saved on the Apple OS, I would appreciate that as well.

The manual I was able to find had some keys wrong. Or perhaps the game had them wrong. Or maybe I had the wrong manual?

Either way, it's annoying but have you tried ctrl and other keys besides D?
Pilots are located here:
~/Library/Application Support/Boxer/Gamebox States/com.gog.star-wars-x-wing-special-edition/Current.boxerstate/C app.harddisk

The correct wingman command is "Shift-C" ("Cover me!")

Sorry it's taken this long to reply. It turns out that I tried every possible key combination on a mission when I didn't have any wingmen. Being in a Y-wing, I cannot issue commands to X-wings of another squad... it would have helped if I got a response like 'cannot issue commands to this craft' or something like that.

It turns out that the correct key combination for me was 'SHIFT' + 'W,C,H, ext.' Thanks Spidey. Also I found that you can issue a limited # of commands to other craft like 'Shift+H' to hyperspace out or 'shift+W' to wait.
