I just got a Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS and figured I'd give my favorite space combat sim a shot, so I'm playing TIE Fighter 1995 CD. I've set dosbox to the recommended settings to make sure turrets fire and I've set my joystick type in the .conf file to 'fcs'. The game clearly recognizes both my stick and my throttle but something is very wrong.

When the game starts up, it makes me calibrate the stick. This seems to work fine. However, as soon as I move the stick on the Sign In screen the cursor ONLY will move to the top left. Interestingly, if I move the throttle up and down the cursor will move up and down the left border.

I tried changing the other joystick setting in the conf but it stopped working altogether.

I seem to remember a similar problem back a thousand years ago when I played the game on a pentium 1 but I don't remember how I solved it (or if its even the same problem).

For what it's worth I also have a PS3 controller plugged into the system but the game didn't seem to recognize it (I have the Thrustmaster set as primary).

I would appreciate any advice but I would BE FOREVER INDEBTED if someone could point me in the direction of a remapper conf or whatever that they know works, or a joy2key profile. In the meantime I guess I'll be playing Alliance which, for the record, works perfectly fine with both throttle and stick (though I wish I could switch yaw and rotation).

I hope this question hasn't been asked already, I didn't see it.

The first thing I'd check is unplugging the controller and see if that fixes the problem. Annoying, but when these games were released it wasn't possible to have more than one "joystick" type controller attached at the same time, so they can get really confused.

If that doesn't work, I'll have to defer to others to offer further advice.
This is related to a bug in the original 1995 Tie Fighter CD version that GoG hasn't patched out. To solve it, you need to download the patch here: http://www.pixelships.com/adg/ep0077.html

The file is the one labeled tiecdjoy.exe. Download it and copy it into your Tie Fighter game folder.

You need to run the patch WITHIN dosbox, or it won't work. So make sure you have dosbox downloaded and installed, then mount the game directory to Dosbox (in Windows, click and drag the game folder on top of the Dosbox desktop icon and it will auto-mount the directory and start up Dosbox.) Then simply type tiecdjoy at the Dosbox command prompt and hit Enter. The patch will do its thing and your joystick should work as intended.

Thanks guys, I'll give both of those a shot. Honestly, though, I started up the Windows 1998 version and it's pretty sweet so I'll stick with that until it's time to play that second campaign.

Thank you for the link though!
