What does the "skill level" that shows up in the Escape menu system (i.e. the menus that you can access by hitting the escape key in the concourse) denote? What is the maximum you can achieve?

The skill level seems to be a relict from X-Wing with no real impact on TIE Fighter. Maximum is supposed to be 65735.
