Until the GOG release, I hadn't played the X-Wing/TIE Fighter games since the 90s, but I seem to recall being able to configure my weapons to fire both laser and ion cannons simultaneously. In my experience with the games thus far, however, I've been unable to locate that ability. Did I remember that function incorrectly, or was that only available in the later games like XvT and Alliance?

Haven't seen that command anywhere. Not in TIE Fighter or in XWA. Frankly, that would give the player unfair advantage over the opposition.

I've played every one of them and i don't recall that even being an option... might be some custom mod perhaps, but in the vanilla games, from the first X-W to XWA, i think it was never there.

I'm pretty sure you could do that in XWA.

I'm pretty sure you can't. I've tried doing it this morning and there is no any such command.
Quote from the Prima X-Wing Alliance guide book, page 20.

"Most ION cannon-equipped craft also carry lasers and allow the two systems to be linked together for a devastating combination."

Link key default X.

I don't think this is possible in any game before Alliance though.

Definitely X? Because when I try doing that, it only links lasers or ion. Could it be only on certain ships? I haven't tried it on TIE Defender and that's the ship in the screenshot. I've been flying Otana this morning and it wouldn't link them together.
It works on every ship except the Otana.

Default is X, if you've changed it I don't know what you changed to.

Try the Tie Defender, as teleguy stated, "It works on every ship except the Otana."

Also the quote from the Prima guide says "most" not all ships.
Well, that's good to know. I've been switching between lasers and ion like in the previous games. Now I won't have to. Been playing this game since it came out in 1999 and never noticed they've added this. Embarrassing. :)
I remember linking lasers and ions together in XWA. It was like you suddenly had an FU button.
in Xwing and TIE you could get a similar efect after you'd fired all your missiles/torpedoes by mashing W to cycle between them really fast.
something about the switch would reset the firing timer. not sure that bug carried over though.
