Keyboard and/or Joystick craps out at the worst times during a mission.
Mapping the joystick also doesn't stick for long.
And Alt-tabbing out of this nightmare screws up my desktop and I can't find my start button to reboot the bloody computer so have to hold down power button and loose anything currently open.

I'm running Win7 64 Professional. Using a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro (usb wired). Keyboard is also a bloody Logitech (wireless). My machine is a quad-core HP Phenom. Sometimes the joystick craps out for a few seconds...but more importantly, my keyboard stops responding and makes those almost-done-hard missions very...very...very aggravating.

Hmm, maybe the USB devices are conflicting somehow. If you've got any other USB hardware plugged in, remove it and also try switching to different USB ports. I'd distribute your input devices among all available USB controllers. You should have at least two of them providing several USB ports each (e.g. on the front side and back side of your case).

Which TIE fighter version are you playing, 1994 or 1998?

I'm playing the 1998 version. My god is it harder than I remembered. Or I'm just not as spry as I used to be. And lazy. Because I groaned 15 minutes in when I got cored by a corvette I thought I could hotshot with a few bombs.

I had the same problem (with my joystick) suddenly. I tried to isolate what had changed, and I had enabled "Double Buffering" under "Advanced Settings" in Graphic Mode Setup. When I disabled that, the joystick worked again. Hopefully this helps you.
