I just bought TIE and X-Wing, but would like to play in windows mode as both titles look terrible when they're stretched out to my widescreen format. I tried using the configuration utility, but it didn't go so well, so looking for recommendations on what to do.

I'm tempted to buy a cheap 17" LCD just to get the squared format. even if it's a bit stretched, it will look better than widescreen stretched.

thanks!
Are you playing the DOS versions? In that case, you should just be able to press Alt+Enter while in-game.
if you're talking about the dos-version, check the dosbox*.conf files and make sure the setting "fullresolution" is set to "native" or "desktop" and make sure "aspect" is set to "true".

if you're talking about the win-version, you have to look into your graphic drivers options for some setting to keep aspect ratio or scaling-options, something like that. or you have to set your screem to square manually, if it supports it.
hello gents...the version is whatever Gog.com is selling now., so I suspect that means Windows?

I've been out of the gaming scene for too long and bought these on a whim for the sake of nostalgia. I hope I don't really have to fiddle faddle all that much to make this work right.

I think my Dell monitor would support pixel mapping, but I'd have to double check.

still thinking of just buying a 17" LCD...LOL!
When you buy from Gog, you get both the DOS disk version AND the Windows CD version. Does the shortcut say 1994 or 1998?

Both XW and TIE are sold by GOG in double format; the original DOS one, via DOSBOX emulation, and the DirectX native windows port, so it really depends on which version you are playing.
The DOSBOX version supports windowed mode out of the box, just press ALT+ENTER or alter the .conf file supplied

As a side note, you can avoid the stretching in full screen by setting up "keep aspect ratio" in your video drivers

I'm not sure what graphics card you have, so I'll just write the procedure for NVIDIA.

- First thing, go to NVIDIA Control Panel.
- Under Display select 'Adjust desktop size and position.'
- In the window on the right, under the heading scaling, select 'No scaling.'
- After that, look below at 'Perform scaling on:' and from a drop down menu select GPU.
- Click Apply and you're done. Game will play in it's native resolution, centered on your screen.
- Alternatively you can select 'Aspect ratio' instead of 'no scaling'. This will retain the aspect ratio of the game but give you a larger image. Uglier than no scaling, but gives you a bigger picture. I use no scaling myself.

I've uploaded an image for better representation.
