Just installed this on my Win 8.1 desktop. Game starts, I create a character then hit Play and then crashes to desktop. Reinstalled a few times with no change. Anyone have an answer ??

Cheers
I've have this problem too, but I've found that disabling the in-game V-SYNC option stops the crashing from creating a character.
Have managed to get going by disabling Frame Buffer effects in Advanced Graphic Options.. Hopefully helps someone.. cheers

Thank you doders69! I have been trying to get this game working for quite a while now and this has finally fixed it.

Thanks for the help, turning off frame buffer worked for me as well. :D
Guys, my frame buffer was already de-selected but am still having the crashing issue. Any thoughts? I'm on a Windows 10 laptop

Disabling Frame Buffer Effects and V-Sync also worked for me. Thanks!
and also disabling soft shadows. check the .ini file and set it to 0. If it's already 0, set it to 1 and disable it from the game options. Sounds weird but it worked for me. No problem with the movies.
This crash is likely linked to cinematic cutscenes. You can check by playing the Intro directly from the main menu (Cinematics submenu). The game should crash, unless you disabled cinematics in the gog settings. This solves the post-character-creation crash, but isn't very desirble in itself.

For me the solution to get the cinematics was yet something else — I had to enable "force software sound". It can be done in the game settings menu or in GOG Galaxy's other settings menu.

You need to disable frame buffer effects and soft shadows. You do not need to disable v-sync. And every other setting works fine.

What you may still get even with those two settings disabled is that when you start a game just after character creation, the intro video will start, but it will be blacked out. It may seem quiet at first because there's no music when the "A long time ago, in a galaxy far far way" would be on screen. So it may appear as if the game is doing nothing. But if you be patient and wait, you'll eventually hear the intro music but have a black screen. In this situation, just alt-tab out and then click the game icon on your taskbar to bring the game back to full screen. The video will be fixed and will automatically restart the video from the beginning. There are only 2 videos in the game that have this issue and that's the first video in the game, just after character creation, and one video on Manaan just after you make an important choice. It's something to do with the way the game transitions from a game menu straight into a video, that's causing the issue. But all other videos that transition into video from gameplay level work fine.

I highly recommend you read the following post which will help you fix just about all issues with this game and even help you mod the game to work better with better graphical fidelity on modern OS's

Hope this helps.
