These game are totally different. Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds is an Age of Empires like game while Empire at War is more like Total War made RTS.
You have two separate RTS battlefields in Empire at War. The campaign map (sandbox or story based) where you build up your fleets, planets (buildings on ground and in space) and ground troops and do research, spy or use bounty hunters. When you attack another fleet the tactical battlefield loads up and you fight space battles in real time. If it gets too dangerous for you, you can retreat unless the enemy deploys Interdictor cruisers with Gravity Well generators that prevent your retreat. There is also a ground based tactical map for each planet where you fight with troops you bring to the planet with your fleet. Some planets have some abandoned factories that you can reacivate and get a couple of droid or swamp units.
This game also has enormous
mod support that makes it highly replayable.
