Been playing this the last three days and enjoying it a lot - though I had previously played it on Xbox so it wasn't as if it was new to me.

Anyway, I had cranked up all of the graphics settings to maximum, including maximum view distance and maximum level of detail (LOD) distance. There was no issue with this until I got to the space battle over Kashyyyk in the single player campaign.

As I was flying around, suddenly the game would freeze up. Nothing moving, no sounds. Also, all keyboard buttons did nothing, except for Ctrl+Alt+Del. Only that combination would work. From there the Task Manager could be loaded, and the desktop visible. Without killing the game I then clicked the game window on the task bar, and it came back up with the game pause menu. Returning to the game resulted in it starting to play again. It did this a few times, but I lost the mission anyway so quit to investigate the issue.

At first I thought it might be the dual core issue, so I set the exe to single core affinity. Restarting the game and retrying the mission showed that the problem was worse as it froze up much quicker, but still the Ctrl+Alt+Del to switch to desktop and back to game worked.

Putting back the original executable so that it used both cores again, I went back into the game and played until it froze up again. This time, after going to desktop and back, I changed the graphics settings back to their default values (well, all the ones that can be reset when you are mid mission, so not screen resolution). It then played perfectly fine, albeit with rubbish view distance and detail.

Since then, I've upped the view distance and LOD distance both up to 75 (and put the high water, shadows and such back on), and I've had no more freezing since. Don't know for certain if the view and detail distance was the cause, but I thought I'd throw this out here on GOG just in case it might help someone if they get the freezing too.

Today I finished the campaign and have done quite a few missions on a Galactic Conquest. No freezes whatsoever. :)

Oh, and it is worth mentioning that I only ever saw this freezing happen on that one space mission. It may happen on others, but having found what appears to be a fix, I've not got any data on whether other missions are affected.
Another possible solution (but probably needs more testing to check) is to play the game using Windowed Borderless Gaming.

Apply the /win command line argument to the game shortcut and then add the game to the Windowed Borderless Gaming application setting the resolution to your desktop resolution to ensure it appears fullscreen. Just had a lengthy space battle (as I played it for fighter craft only, mostly ignoring the capital ships) with no freezing at all.

What do you mean by add to the Windows Borderless Gaming application?

If you download the application "Windowed Borderless Gaming" then it will make sense. You add game executables to this program, which runs in the background, and when it detects that game is being used it puts it into a borderless window (so that it appears fullscreen if you use your desktop resolution, but it is actually running in a window).
