I do share the concerns about the controls. I hope things have improved since launch. Very interested but worried the controls might be too frustrating. Will definitely be stuck with keyboard and mouse. It is one of the frustrating parts I have with X4 timelines, which has some time trials requiring mastery of manual docking or speeding through spacesuit mazes or rushed repairs of a dying space station. In spite of my best efforts, I did rather poorly. Thankfully, I could still progress the story eventually. (I hope I didn't miss anything by not scoring well. :() This game feels like every hard thing about X4 rolled into one. While I appreciate the "simulate the day-to-day trials of maintaining a truck" experience, I am hoping it's possible to enjoy the aesthetics of the game like the scenery and music and such without having to worry about too many things breaking around me. I wonder if it's possible to hire an NPC driver to run the truck while I assist where I can, either as a learner or a guest? It's one of my favorite features of X4, where you can hire a crew of a ship, give them orders and just hang around enjoying the scenery and watching the npc crew performing their orders, like trading or mining or combat or massive space battles. I find myself learning a thing or two about how to maneuver a large ship into a dock, etc watching the npcs in action.
