I know the fun comes from actually steering the ship and shooting phasers and torpedoes (and the complexity that comes with it; i.e. aligning to sub-systems to deactivate etc).

However, I wanted to play the game solely as captain, but I utterly fail every time. Tactical guy does always a lousy job when I leave settings to at will.

How do I play the game effectively as captain just relying on my crew?

Also, the tactical dude does not even attempt to evade torpedoes when you set anything but evade under orders.


I know you guys love the game so did I back then, but in hindsight this is a very bad Star Trek command simulation if you truly want to be the captain only. The fun comes from steering and attacking, which is not a captain's job at all.....

You play on the lowest difficulty. The combat AI simply isn't good enough to play using the command crew only, there are no commands to protect your aft, port, starboard, telling the helm to show them your top shield etc which is unfortunate. So your dumb ass crew will just cycle through phasers and shoot.

Use the F keys, F1 through F5 in space view. ( outside the ship view ) that way you save time between commands.
