Figured it out! If anyone else is wondering, it's kinda hidden in manual, I thought it would have its own key or something.
On the bridge:
Click tab then select kirk then click star fleet symbol.
(Or hit k then select symbol)
On planet
Right click with the mouse then select symbol in top right of the window that comes up.
