Hello all,

I bought Star Control 1 & 2 from GOG for $3 (which seemed like a very good deal), but the keyboard controls seem VERY cumbersome and difficult to figure out. I'm running Win 10 (64 bit). Can anyone give me a list of keyboard commands, including how to get from one submenu on the screen to another. Also, is there any way around the "inertia" feature that seems to make it almost impossible to navigate from one planet or spot on a planet to another.

Also anyone know of a good wiki with hints/ help? I haven't found the game manual very helpful.

Thanks for reading and for any help or suggestions.

I have played SC 1 since it first came out, and I still go back to it every now and then. I think I'm using my GOG.COM install, so hopefully what I'm saying is correct for you:

For both SC 1 & 2, in the game folder there is a file called keys.exe, where you can see the current key bindings, and change them. My current setup (I don't know if this was the default) is arrow keys for left/right/thrust, space for fire, and "f" for special. In menus, you use up and down arrows, and <return/enter> to select an option. For SC2, <esc> backs out of some selections.

The trouble with keys.exe is that you have to run it in dosbox, just like the game executable. I have a shortcut in my "Star Control 1 and 2" folder which runs keys.exe in dosbox properly. Use that if you have it (I don't know if it comes with the GOG installation). If you don't, and don't know how to run a program through dosbox, I'll dig up the dosbox.conf file I use to run keys.exe for you.

I'm assume it's in SC2 that you're talking about the inertia - there's no turning that off, but you get used to it. I get my ship going, and turn sideways to make sure I actually hit a planet I'm aiming for. With practice, you can really zip along and still hit your target.
Thank you legraf!

I've given up on it for the moment -- been looking at Urquan Masters (Sourceforge) with the hope that perhaps that version solves some of these issues.

I'll be back here with more as I look further into it.

Again, I appreciate your trouble in responding and offering help.

I figured out that F10 gets you a prompt to get out of the screen you're on and back to the main menu with an F1 for confirmation. But that's all I've figured out so far.
