So, i just got my first mission from sultan. we stormed the wreck and knuckles got brutalized by a double barreled shotgun. do i have to reload a savegame? because we have cleared the wreck and everyone i talk to to tells me to talk to the "boss" who is "over there".

Is he actually dead, or just wounded?

Hmm... you might be out of luck, unfortunately. I seem to remember having a similar problem, and being unable to get my reward as a result.

According to a guide, if Knuckles dies, it should point you to another bandit ("newly promoted leader") who will give you a reward. Try looking for a bandit who appears as a star on the minimap. It should also be pointing towards said bandit if that mission is set as your active mission. Otherwise, it just might be bugged, which would be quite rare. You should also save regularly and keep multiple saves just in case.

It's also not the "first mission". CoP is open-ended with multiple side missions to complete as you see fit. Your real first mission is to find and investigate the Stingray crash sites.

Besides, what loser joins Bandits anyway? Help out your fellow Loners instead.

I just loaded a savegame. This time it was "Crybaby" who died. So nothing of value was lost. And... you can finish the game without joining the bandits???

But of course. You don't have to join any sides or do any side missions. After all, your real mission is to investigate the failure of Operation Fairway and things go from there.

Sultan offers you this job. However, you can also talk to Beard (the bartender) or Spartacus (a stalker located in the bar) to inform them about the bandit plan and assist the Loners and then follow that quest line instead. You can also ignore said mission completely and it will eventually solve itself.

The way you handle missions will also have effects on your endings as well. (Like in Fallout, once you complete the game, you will be told what happened to people and locations afterwards)
