Loving the game so far, but one small gripe: when it's nighttime, it doesn't actually get dark. I hear the crickets chriping and the sounds of nighttime, but the sky remains clear (not taking the clouds into account).
Weather effects like rain are present as normal.
Is there a setting I should adjust in order to get black skies? I've seen nighttime on youtube playthroughs so I'm assuming there's a problem with my settings/version? Seems like the game could be scarier and more immersive if that touch would be added.

Try playing with the Gamma setting?

Hi, can you post some images to see how bright is it? :)
Nights aren't particularly dark for me either. They're noticeably darker than daytime, but still plenty bright enough to see. For me it's only actually "dark" between midnight and 4am. It's likely just a factor of your gamma/contrast/brightness. It may take some tinkering to get the nights dark but the daytime bright. (I've found upping the contrast seems to make the most difference here.)

It's also possible the youtube videos you've seen have been using a mod that darkens the night.

I also had the same problem with nights not being very dark almost as if it was a full moon every night, then i installed Stalker complete mod.
Now when night comes it actually gets dark & i have to plan & be cautious about my next move & if its worth the risk turning on my flash light & giving away my location.

The mod is easy to install & i've had no bugs/glitches with it so far(about 15hrs gameplay using mod)
