Gonna try not to be spoilerific here. In one part of the game you're presented with an opportunity to choose between two different factions. I chose not-Duty. Bang-bang shoot-shoot loot-loot, no sweat. Then got back on the main story line and traveled to the Bar area. As soon as I loaded that area, the duty folks were all over me. Had to wipe out all of them on that map, and found that they're also attacking me in other maps. Damn, word travels fast around these parts! I suppose the game accounts for this but is that pretty much it between me and Duty from now on?

Also, since they are pissed-off, of the shoot-on-sight variety, I got a little stuck. I went down to the bar in Bar and found a duty guy in there. And he shot at me. Problem is, that's a no-weapon zone and I can't take him out since I can't draw a weapon. Nor am I able to lure him outside where I can use my weapons. Might this be solved by leaving Bar (the whole area, not just the bar itself) and returning? And is Bar going to restock with more pissed-off Duty members every time I return? Could get annoying if I need to clean out the place every single time I go through that area. Will be more annoying if that Duty guy is there forever.
* * * * * POSSIBLE SPOILERS! * * * * *

certain choices mean you'll align with freedom (and therefore against duty) - even if you dont actually join them. as you're supposed to be headed north from that point innthe plot, you dont actually need to return to the bar, but whenever you see duty from now on, stop, drop and bring up those iron sights!

you can actually play that segment at army warehouses and do some work for both factions while remaining neutral - though its not easy and prone to bugging out a bit at times (can also be quite hilarious).

to summarise: no, you havent been humped by a snork. duty will slowly restock the bar, but like I said, you want to head north... unless... did you goto the army warehouses BEFORE yantar?

Army Warehouses before Yantar... not sure. I'll have to fire it up to check. I don't yet know the locations by name ; ) For now it's "That one place with the train" and "That one place with the swamp" and "That one place where you can't go anywhere because the Geiger counter is buzzing like a chainsaw".

Encountered a couple more random Duty guys, and looted their corpses. Word got around that I'm to be shot on sight, but apparently they did not also spread the word that it's better for life expectancy to avoid me altogether. ; )

I'll have to hit up the Bar / bar again soon, to see if Lujach or whatever his name lets Duty guys wander around the bar with weapons; odd that the two guards there don't take him out. Anyway, made it to the first cutscene, coming after exploration into a certain plot-line laboratory. That place was a pain in the neck. Or, should I say, the back of the head? All those flying barrels and crates kept bouncing off my cranium. Doesn't help that I HAVE TO explore every little corner of the place...

sounds like you've done it quite early in the game ie shortly after arriving at the bar (sounds liek you've just done the missions in dark valley). it wont by any means ruin the experience (in fact, it should make it more replayable for other choices), but you'll certainly have some firefights between now and the mid-late game. :)

Glad you're enjoying it! :)
A couple updates:

- yup, went to the Army Warehouses before Yantar. Planning to head over to Yantar now.

- it was a temporary boning. I left the Bar, fiddled around a couple other places, and then went back. There were new Duty guys hanging around at the southeast guardpost from Garbage (I think that's right), and the transition point from Garbage to Bar (while still in Garbage) was a tough fight. Made it to the bar itself; sure enough, the Duty guy is still there and still shoots on sight. He's a patron and has been there the entire time - I just never paid attention since he was not throwing lead at me before. I attempted playing hide and seek, trying to draw him outside so I could pull my own weapon to fight back. It wasn't working, but eventually he got himself behind the bar with the barkeep - not sure why the guard let him past, but there ya go. I used CTRL and SHIFT to get down as low as possible, crouched my way to the spot where the barkeep will talk (Duty guy is still burning through ammunition), and opened dialog with F. As soon as the barkeep acknowledged that I had completed that bit of the main story, Duty went neutral. Odd, but it worked.

There are still a few Duty guys who are shown as enemy but they are easily avoided; the rest are now leaving me alone.

Now it's Military, Mercs, and Monolith who shoot on sight but that's probably the normal way of things.
